Global temperatures continued to increase in 2020

The 2020 global temperatures tied the record high from 2016, but the pandemic led to decreased greenhouse gas emissions in the past year. Although the global temperatures did not top the record high from 2016, the on land temperatures reached new record highs, leading to extreme temperatures in Siberia which caused large-scale bushfires and the thawing of the, for the earths climate so important, permafrost. Additionally, the US and Australia experienced record-setting temperatures leading to devastating bushfires in both countries. With this current warming, the global temperatures would exceed the 1.5°C limit set in the Paris agreement by 2035.
